Midsummer Day (Quarter Day)
Another bad day. Rain all morning and cool. Dot and Jane home today. Finished raking gradd up round courts. Cleared the silage lab out. Went for petrol today. 1 gall. 707 miles on clock.
My granddad died in 1983. For the previous 20 years, he kept a diary, recording his day as a farm worker and then through his retirement. We are lucky enough to have his notebooks, all the entries in block capitals, often in pencil. He always tells us about the weather, sometimes about what is going well at the allotment. We get updates of how Liverpool are doing and the occasional political thought. He suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, was always in pain, but you would never know from these entries. My mum once described him as a contented man. Who knows, really, but certainly, there is something soothing about these entries. So I thought I would share them with you. We have a few years to cover so buckle up.

Midsummer Day (Quarter Day)
Another bad day. Rain all morning and cool. Dot and Jane home today. Finished raking gradd up round courts. Cleared the silage lab out. Went for petrol today. 1 gall. 707 miles on clock.
More rain again this morning. But fair after dinner. A calf to burn and a small pig. Finished mowing round the courts. Started to get it up.
A wet morning but a nice afternoon. Norman Harris brought 16 sacks of stuff to burn. A new countryman car came. Did some mowing round courts.
A dull cloudy day with rain at times. Washed B2 and K cars. Brushed the drive up. New joiner started here today. Pumped tyres up on the moped.
Not a bad day but cool out of the sun. Dot and Ron stayed the night. Jane very pleased to see them. Put soil to my spuds and cabbage.
Not a bad day but wind still cool and strong. Frank and Dora and David and his pal came. Dot and Ron got back about 5.30pm. Brought plenty to smoke.
A dry day with some sun. But a very strong wind. Car washing. T. Doc, making 73 to date. Cleaned out all the lab bins. Brushed up round steps.
Not bad. Some sun. Wind. On the cool side. Moving around the T courts. Nell had to take Jane to the docs. A bad cough. He said she was very healthy, thank God.
A nice day. Some sun. Not very hot. Jane seems happy so far but will be glad when Mum and Dad get back. Moved weeds from by the office and tidying up there.
Cooler today with heavy showers at times. Mowed in between other shed and cocked it up. Put most of the wood in the incinerator.
