Easter Monday
Still very cold and dull. Mr Simpson came to see me in the morning. Dot, Ron, Jane and Aunty Clara* came for their dinner. Poor Tom Sumner died suddenly.
(*My Dad’s aunty. Not the best of our relations.)
My granddad died in 1983. For the previous 20 years, he kept a diary, recording his day as a farm worker and then through his retirement. We are lucky enough to have his notebooks, all the entries in block capitals, often in pencil. He always tells us about the weather, sometimes about what is going well at the allotment. We get updates of how Liverpool are doing and the occasional political thought. He suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, was always in pain, but you would never know from these entries. My mum once described him as a contented man. Who knows, really, but certainly, there is something soothing about these entries. So I thought I would share them with you. We have a few years to cover so buckle up.

Still a very cold East wind. Coldest Easter for 80 years. Did a bit of digging. Cyril came to see me at night. Went for a drink. Saw old Mick.
On. Wind still cold from the East. Sharpened my mowing machine and did the mowing. Boat race on. Went to P in the afternoon. Did the mowing and then some pruning.
Good Friday
A cold East wind still. Got up about 9.30am. Put five rows of early spuds in. Ron brought little Jane to see us. No one else came during the day. Had a nice quiet day.
A slight frost this morning but a lovely sunny day. Only two cars this week. H.T. making 64 to date. Cleared all the bins out today and did all the Ts. A big lot of stuff to burn.
A strong N.W. wind blowing rather cold but no rain. Saw a daffodil out in the wood. Cleaned T. car. Cleaned H and C filters No.1. burner. Loaded rubbish on trailer.
Nice and mild but heavy rain all day. Cleaned H car and both the jets now not going too well as yet. Bright Sides took old section away. Burnt more books.
A lovely mild, sunny day. Working nearly all day on No.1 burner. Had to put new olives on all pipes. Didn’t wash any cars. Did two of the Ts. Still burning books. Lot left yet.
Clocks went on 1 hr last night. Got up about 9.30 and did the mowing. Put all my dahlias out. Ron, Dot and Jane came for dinner. Stayed until about 7pm.
Day off again today. A nice mild day for a change. Pruned next door’s roses and tied up my own climbers. Went to P in the pm. Did mowing for the first time. Pruned roses.
