Got up at 7 a.m. to go on the Council trip. Bus left Ness at 7.45. Went to Carnarvon and finished at Rhyl. Went to see Askey.* Had a good day with Alf. Home around 1.
*Assume this was Arthur Askey who was playing summer season in Rhyl that year.

My granddad died in 1983. For the previous 20 years, he kept a diary, recording his day as a farm worker and then through his retirement. We are lucky enough to have his notebooks, all the entries in block capitals, often in pencil. He always tells us about the weather, sometimes about what is going well at the allotment. We get updates of how Liverpool are doing and the occasional political thought. He suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, was always in pain, but you would never know from these entries. My mum once described him as a contented man. Who knows, really, but certainly, there is something soothing about these entries. So I thought I would share them with you. We have a few years to cover so buckle up.

Brought Dot and little Jane around Weatherstones this morning. Came on the 11 bus and went home on the 12.20. Jane enjoyed it very much.

Got up at 9.20. A very cold wind blowing. Amused myself with Jane quite a lot. Didn’t do any work. Watched cricket on T.V. in the afternoon. W.S. at night.
Wind cold today. Got up at 9.30 a.m. and had a lazy day. Nothing of importance happened. Went to the Wheatsheaf at night. Saw Old Jim.
First day of the hols today. Not a bad day. Made a frame for little Jane’s swing and fixed it up. She likes it very much. Billy and Dora came to see us.
Rain last nigth and cloud this a.m. but sunny later. Car washing. H.T.G. making 132 to date. Start 2 weeks of holidays tonight. Ron took some wood for Jane’s swing.
A nice warm day with a nice breeze. Finish cutting the pillars and the hedge in front of chief’s office. Did the Ts. A small pig in for burning. Ted Williams off sick.
Cool at first but nice and warm later. Did some hedge cutting and started to cut the top of the pillars. No time to do any Ts. Not a lot to burn. Some papers from A’s office.
Rather cool at first but a bit warmer in the p.m. Washed Shack’s car and polished the chrome. Did all the Ts. A lot of books to burn from Atfield’s office. Knee not to bad.
